Bill Freeland Selected for National Academy Exhibition.

NEW YORK, NY May 29, 2008 – The National Academy Museum has included the work of Bill Freeland in its 183rd biennial non-member invitational exhibition. Selections were made from over four hundred recommended artists submitted for consideration and chosen by a curatorial committee comprised of a panel of seven prominent National Academicians.

Inverted Yoke, 2005The committee chose to include Freeland’s sculpture Inverted Yoke (2005) in the exhibition. "In regarding the yoke as an ancient oppressive symbol, it was my intention to modify this configuration. By inverting or reversing the direction of the yoke it was possible to transform this object of wood, stone and steel to an open yoke, so that it might be an image symbolic of openness and liberty," says Freeland.

Representing an exceptional selection of contemporary art by over 125 of the country’s finest artists, this exhibition consists of works by emerging artists as well and established artists. Providing an overview of the broad range of art being produced across America today, the exhibition offers an opportunity for the public to preview new artistic directions in contemporary American art.

The National Academy was founded in 1825, and is currently an honorary association of professional artists, a museum, and a school of fine arts. The Academy has an outstanding collection of American art, and its holdings represent all of the major and minor movements from the 19th century to the present. The Academy Museum presents changing exhibitions of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and architecture. Fashioned after the great European academies of art, The School of Fine Arts offers classes in painting, sculpture, and printmaking for students of all ages and levels of experience.
